Top Travel Destination: Italy in Vogue for Two Months Running on Top Travel Site

(PRWeb) February 9, 2007 -- In both December and January, Italy has edged out the U.K., Ireland and other Western European counties to be the top travel destination by visitors to the popular online travel website www.TravelAndTourReview.com. In fact, 40 percent of travel seekers were interested in Italian tours, making it by far the most sought after country. This is no surprise considering 2002 statistics, which find that Italy is one of four countries, along with France, Spain and the U.K., that when combined, draw 25 percent of the world's tourists.

According to TravelAndTourReview.com statistics, in January, 40 percent of respondents researched travel plans to Italy, 35 percent searched on the U.K. and Ireland and the remaining 25 percent of inquiries were for various Western European countries.

These trends are in line with World Tourism Organization statistics, which find that half of European vacations occur in only four countries--France, Spain, Italy and U.K., which together welcome about 190 million foreign tourists yearly.

Part of Italy's recent tourism success may be due to the newly created National Committee for Tourism, and a national tourism website launched in 2006 which aims to market the Italian trademark abroad and help tourists make travel plans.
